Lighting Evaluation: 3rd Floor Computer Lab

Our group chose the computer lab on the 3rd floor of studio. The space is primary used for classes and for individuals to come and work on the computers. The room is lit by fluorescent and ambient lighting. There are several light fixtures that are spaced evenly throughout the space. They hang over the computer desks and near the white board at the front of the room. The room can hold roughly 25 people comfortably and is a public space that the entire IARC department uses. We feel like this room is too bright and the light feels too indirect. There are only a few desk lamps available for use and it would more helpful if there were more. One for each computer would be ideal. It would also be better if the overhead light was more focused and more direct over each individual work space.

After completing the chart, we found the room is very stagnant, cold, and uncomfortable. It is gray and lacks color and warmth. After spending long periods of time in the room, a person will feel tense, un-relaxed and discomfort. The space can feel too small and cramped when the room is full. It is sterile and uninspiring. It would be nice if the room was larger and there was more work space available for each individual. Any color and soft materials would help enhance the working environment. If there were more task and less ambient lighting, or more controlled ambient lighting, the feel of the space would be affected in positive manner. It could affect the overall feeling of the room and improve students performance.
